CiteSmart add-in for Word 2007

Since CiteSmart version 2.0.4, a new add-in for Word 2007 (and not previous versions) has been added to CiteSmart. With this add-in, users can search Medline from Microsoft Word directly and get back the results in a "task pane". This is an additional way to streamline the bibliographic work process.

Note regarding Microsoft Word versions prior to 2007: this add-in won't work! Use the CiteSmart toolbar for Word instead.

Requirements

To be able to install and run the add-in, you MUST have installed on your system various components. We also recommend to use Internet Explorer to visit the provided links and download these programs. It is possible (if you have installed other add-ins) that some or all of these components are already installed on your system.

  • The Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 or later. Download here. Note that this will download and install about 200 MB of material.
  • The Microsoft Visual Studio 3.0 Runtime Environment (VSTO RE). Download here. Note that both the .Net Framework and Microsoft Office 2007 must be installed before installing the VSTO RE.
  • Office 2007 System Primary Interop Assemblies. Download here.
  • CiteSmart add-in for Word 2007. Download from MireSoft.

These components may already be present on your system. During the installation of the CiteSmart add-in for Word 2007, the installer will check and ask the user to install the two first components if they are missing (.Net Framework and VSTO RE). However, the installer will not check if the component "Office 2007 Primary Interop Assemblies" is available on the user's sytem. If it is not, the add-in won't be loaded in Word. Thus, it is safer to simply install it.

Installation

Make sure you have installed on your stystem all the components mentioned in the requirement section above. Additionally, make sure that no Word instances are running. Then go to the MireSoft website, download and install the CiteSmart add-in for Word 2007. Start Word 2007. At startup, a message box will pop up warning that the Publisher cannot be identified (as MireSoft hasn't purchased a Certificate as of yet). Click Install.

After the install is performed, the Add-in tab should show up on the right of the ribbon. Click on this tab and the CiteSmart add-in should be available. If not, contact MireSoft support : support at miresoft.com

Usage

The add-in will be responsive only if CiteSmart is running in the background. The usage is very straightforward and we hope, will save you time! Here is the user guide.

A- Ribbon Functions

Show/Hide Pane. This will show or hide the pane. Note that this will reset the content of the pane (search box and reference list)

Create Index. Will create/update the bibliographic index.

Cite. References selected in CiteSmart will be cited in the active word document.

Load Library. Assuming that the library lib1.lcs is opened in CiteSmart, this function will load all references from lib1.lcs into the Search Pane's List (in Word). Any reference can then be inserted in the document via a double click in the list. Note that when mousing over a reference, the full title is displayed.

Search in Library/Medline. This will search references for various keywords in the currently opened library or in Medline. If no search terms are selected in the document, then a dialog box opens to ask for them, otherwise the terms selected in the document will be searched in either the library or in Medline. The results will be displayed in the CiteSmart search pane.

B- Search Pane

Search Box. Enter terms to search the currently opened library in CiteSmart.

Reference List.

This list will be populated when:

  • Loading the library (assuming that the library opened in CiteSmart contains at least one reference).
  • Searching for references in the library or Medline (assuming that the search returned at least one reference matching the query). In the case of a Medline search, the first 50 references matching a query are returned. Therefore, the search must be specific enough to retrieve the desired reference(s).

References in the CS Pane list (that are also in the active CS library) can be inserted via a double click.

For references returned after a Medline search: these references will appear in grey (as they are considered not to be in the active CS library, and even if they are in the library, it doesn't matter). This means that they cannot be inserted directly. Before a reference can be cited from the Task Pane, the reference must be saved in the CiteSmart active library. To do this, double click on the reference. The reference will then be downloaded by CiteSmart and saved, and will appear in black and bold (in the Task Pane in Word). Only then can it be inserted in the Word document via a double click.
